Microsoft flagged two zero-day security vulnerabilities under active attack in October’s Patch Tuesday update, which affect Microsoft WordPad and Skype for Business. The release also features a critical-rated, wormable bug in Message Queuing that could instill terror for admins of vulnerable systems.

The two bugs are part of a cadre of 103 total CVEs addressed by the computing giant this month. The patches run the gamut of Microsoft’s portfolio, including Azure, ASP.NET, Core, and Visual Studio; Exchange Server; Office, Microsoft Dynamics, and Windows.

Here’s where more than half of organizations are piloting generative AI

Posted by in categories: business, robotics/AI

A new Gartner poll reveals that genAI technology is being deployed by organizations for three key business processes, while a Google Cloud poll shows enthusiasm for AI tools among developers.

A poll of more than 1,400 executive leaders revealed a threefold increase in organizations piloting generative AI (genAI) and more than a doubling of those who have placed the tech into production.

The new Gartner Research survey revealed that 45% of organizations are running genAI pilots, and another 10% have put genAI solutions into production — a significant increase from an earlier poll conducted in March and April 2023, in which only 15% of respondents were piloting generative AI and 4% were in… More.

OpenAI said to be considering developing its own AI chips

Posted by in categories: business, robotics/AI

OpenAI, one of the best-funded AI startups in business, is exploring making its own AI chips.

Discussions of AI chip strategies within the company have been ongoing since at least last year, according to Reuters, as the shortage of chips to train AI models worsens. OpenAI is reportedly considering a number of strategies to advance its chip ambitions, including acquiring an AI chip manufacturer or mounting an effort to design chips internally.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made the acquisition of more AI chips a top priority for the company, Reuters reports.

Arc Boats Takes a Page from Tesla and Space X

Posted by in categories: business, climatology, space, sustainability

Mitch Lee can tick off the many environmental advantages of electric boats versus ICE counterparts that rule the waves: No exhaust fumes and pollution. No oil slicks trailing in the wake. No guzzling of pricey marine fuel at 2 kilometers-per-liter or less.

But with all respect to the Sierra Club, Arc Boats isn’t in business to save the planet.

“The climate benefits are certainly there. But our goal is to deliver better boats, period,” says Lee, the CEO and former Boeing engineer whose cofounder and CTO, Ryan Cook, is the former lead engineer of Space X.

Generative AI exists because of the transformer

Posted by in categories: business, education, finance, law, robotics/AI

Over the past few years, we have taken a gigantic leap forward in our decades-long quest to build intelligent machines: the advent of the large language model, or LLM.

This technology, based on research that tries to model the human brain, has led to a new field known as generative AI — software that can create plausible and sophisticated text, images and computer code at a level that mimics human ability.

Businesses around the world have begun to experiment with the new technology in the belief it could transform media, finance, law and professional services, as well as public services such as education. The LLM is underpinned by a scientific development known as the transformer model, made by Google researchers in 2017.

The emergent industrial metaverse

Posted by in categories: business, robotics/AI

Annika Hauptvogel, head of technology and innovation management at Siemens, describes the industrial metaverse as “immersive, making users feel as if they’re in a real environment; collaborative in real time; open enough for different applications to seamlessly interact; and trusted by the individuals and businesses that participate”—far more than simply a digital world.

The industrial metaverse will revolutionize the way work is done, but it will also unlock significant new value for business and societies. By allowing businesses to model, prototype, and test dozens, hundreds, or millions of design iterations in real time and in an immersive, physics-based environment before committing physical and human resources to a project, industrial metaverse tools will usher in a new era of solving real-world problems digitally.

“The real world is very messy, noisy, and sometimes hard to really understand,” says Danny Lange, senior vice president of artificial intelligence at Unity Technologies, a leading platform for creating and growing real-time 3D content. “The idea of the industrial metaverse is to create a cleaner connection between the real world and the virtual world, because the virtual world is so much easier and cheaper to work with.”
