Can we refrain from inane comments about fascism? Unless you have something constructive to say I’ll probably just delete it and block you from commenting in the future. Or I might turn off comments altogether. With that out of the way, enjoy the book.

Eruption of Papua New Guinea volcano subsides though thick ash is billowing 3 miles into the sky

Posted by in category: futurism

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — An eruption of Papua New Guinea’s tallest volcano that raised regional tsunami fears subsided Tuesday, but thick ash still billowed into the sky and coated roofs and palm trees nearby.

One of the South Pacific nation’s most active volcanoes, Mount Ulawun erupted on Monday, spewing ash as high as 15 kilometers (50,000 feet).

Papua New Guinea’s Geohazards Management Division said while the eruption had been downgraded since Monday from the maximum alert level, there were no signs that it was ending.

“A Profound Change in Paradigm” — Scientists Uncover New Origin Story for Key Regulatory Gene

Posted by in category: futurism

The Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), initially identified in Drosophila several decades ago, was found to be a key controller of developmental genes. Subsequent research revealed that PRC2 alters chromatin structure to suppress the expression of specific genes.

This initial understanding of PRC2’s ancestral function — functioning primarily to control genes during development — was challenged when it was found to be active in unicellular organisms, in which no development takes place.

Archaeologists uncover Europe’s hidden Bronze Age megastructures

Posted by in category: futurism

Archaeologists from University College Dublin, working with colleagues from Serbia and Slovenia, have uncovered a previously unknown network of massive sites in the heart of Europe that could explain the emergence of the continent’s Bronze Age megaforts—the largest prehistoric constructions seen prior to the Iron Age.

Using and aerial photography to stitch together the prehistoric landscape of the south Carpathian Basin in Central Europe, the team discovered more than 100 sites belonging to a complex society.

Their commonplace use of defensible enclosures was a precursor and likely influence behind the famous hillforts of Europe, built to protect communities later in the Bronze Age.

Don Page — Is Information the Foundation of Reality?

Posted by in category: futurism

Could information be the stuff of which everything is made? Information seems so abstract, not a substance or a thing, so how could it be the building blocks of reality? There are ways and reasons how information can literally be reality, some scientists claim, and their ideas are revolutionary.

The catastrophic rise of insect farming and its implications for future efforts to reduce suffering

Posted by in categories: food, futurism

On the 17th of August 2021, the EU authorized the use of insects as feed for farmed animals such as chickens and pigs. This was a disastrous decision for sentient beings, as it may greatly increase the number of beings who will suffer in animal agriculture. Sadly, this was just one in a series of disastrous decisions that the EU has made regarding insect farming in the last couple of years. Most recently, in February 2022, they authorized the farming of house crickets for human consumption, after having made similar decisions for the farming of mealworms and migratory locusts in 2021.

Many such catastrophic decisions probably lie ahead, seeing that the EU is currently reviewing applications for the farming of nine additional kinds of insects. This brief posts reviews some reflections and potential lessons in light of these harmful legislative decisions.
