Why Does a Robot Say Such Strange Things?
Posted by Dave Holt in categories: futurism, robotics/AI
As more and more sophisticated robots look and sound more human, it’s going to be tough to distinguish them from people. In the near future, the average person will completely immerse into experiencing their personal humanoid robots as real beings with feelings.
Sophia (meaning “wisdom” in Greek) an advanced AI robot is saying some strange things but what is really going on? This is my theory…check it out.

The nor’easter slamming the East Coast is undergoing the rapid intensification process known as ‘bombogenesis’
Posted by Genevieve Klien in category: futurism
It’s official: the bomb cyclone is back.
The winter storm that the Weather Channel has dubbed “Riley” has been undergoing the rapid intensification process called “bombogenesis,” which means its central pressure is dropping quickly (an indicator of a storm’s strength).
In this case, the nor’easter still appears to be intensifying, but the central surface pressure of the storm system has already dropped by at least 24 millibars (mb) in 24 hours, which means it is undergoing bombogenesis (or “explosive bombogenesis”) and qualifies it as a weather bomb or bomb cyclone.

A New Study Suggests It May Be Possible To Fall Into A Black Hole And Actually Survive
Posted by Genevieve Klien in categories: cosmology, futurism
Your past would theoretically be obliterated and a strange new future would stand before you.
The belief that venturing into a black hole will lead to instant death, with one’s body being torn to pieces, is one that has long pervaded the scientific community, but now a new study by a Berkeley University physicist has suggested that it may actually be possible to fall into a black hole and survive.
Even more intriguing, once inside the black hole, a person may find that their past has been completely obliterated and they could have the opportunity to live many different and strange futures.

Some people will tell you that the Golden State Warriors are the future of basketball — a migration towards overlapping skill sets, a dozen similar 6-foot-8ish frames playing multiple positions, all switchy and, most importantly, twitchy from behind the 3-point line. This narrative hypothetical has been well-circulated — that we’re moving towards a version of basketball defined by a few unicorns and a surplus of redundantly versatile supporting players.
But what if the future of basketball doesn’t include players at all?
At the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference at the end of February, researches Thomas Seidl and Aditya Cherukumudi presented a paper called Bhostgusters: Realtime Interactive Play Sketching With Synthesized NBA Defenses. The abbreviated summary is that they have developed an app which would allow an NBA coach to sketch a play on their tablet and then receive an animated estimation of how the defense would respond, taking into account the spatial tendencies of the specific defense as well as the players on the floor, defensive roles, the players’ foul trouble and potential fatigue based on minutes played, as well as the time and score. The program also returns an expected value for the offensive play the coach has drawn, given the projected defensive response.
