Revolutionary “LEGO-Like” Photonic Chip Paves Way for Semiconductor Breakthroughs

Posted by in categories: computing, internet

Researchers at the University of Sydney Nano Institute have developed a small silicon semiconductor chip that combines electronic and photonic (light-based) elements. This innovation greatly enhances radio-frequency (RF) bandwidth and the ability to accurately control information flowing through the unit.

Expanded bandwidth means more information can flow through the chip and the inclusion of photonics allows for advanced filter controls, creating a versatile new semiconductor device.

Researchers expect the chip will have applications in advanced radar, satellite systems, wireless networks, and the roll-out of 6G and 7G telecommunications and also open the door to advanced sovereign manufacturing. It could also assist in the creation of high-tech value-add factories at places like Western Sydney’s Aerotropolis precinct.

Boffins build a giant brain for a robot

One brain to rule them

Two researchers have revealed how they are creating a single super-brain that can pilot any robot, no matter how different they are.

Sergey Levine and Karol Hausman wrote in IEEE Spectrum that generative AI, which can create text and images, is not enough for robotics because the Internet does not have enough data on how robots interact with the world.

Multiple AI models help robots execute complex plans more transparently

Posted by in categories: internet, robotics/AI

The HiP framework developed MIT_CSAIL creates detailed plans for robots using the expertise of three different foundation models, helping it execute tasks in households, factories, and construction that require multiple steps.

“All we want to do is take existing pre-trained models and have them successfully interface with each other,” says Anurag Ajay, a PhD student in the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and a CSAIL affiliate. “Instead of pushing for one model to do everything, we combine multiple ones that leverage different modalities of internet data. When used in tandem, they help with robotic decision-making and can potentially aid with tasks in homes, factories, and construction sites.”

These models also need some form of “eyes” to understand the environment they’re operating in and correctly execute each sub-goal. The team used a large video diffusion model to augment the initial planning completed by the LLM, which collects geometric and physical information about the world from footage on the internet. In turn, the video model generates an observation trajectory plan, refining the LLM’s outline to incorporate new physical knowledge.

Artifact, Instagram founders’ News app, to shut down next month

Posted by in category: internet

The app also had a social media component, where users could create their posts by finding and sharing interesting links from around the web. Users could also like and comment on other users’ posts, and follow their favorite writers.

However, Artifact struggled to define its identity and value proposition in the crowded and competitive market of news and social media platforms. The app faced competition from established players like Twitter, Pinterest, SmartNews Apple News, and Meta’s own Instagram, which recently launched a new feature called Threads, which allows users to create and join conversations around topics they care about.
