Einride is digitizing freight to grow electric, autonomous, sustainable solutions

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, sustainability, transportation

Einride is trying to change how the world moves goods. The Sweden-based company with a growing U.S. presence combines battery-electric power with automation and data to develop freight’s future.

The company’s futuristic-looking equipment became a tourist attraction in New York City last week when it parked an electric truck and a cab-less Autonomous Electric Transport vehicle on West 23rd Street in Chelsea, where passersby stopped to take pictures with the electric freight movers.

While some companies focused on the future of transportation are taking more measured approaches, Einride’s leaders told FleetOwner that it is ready to move the freight world into the future now.

Bacteria Breakthrough Could Simplify Rare Earth Element Processing

Posted by in categories: computing, mobile phones, sustainability

Penn State researchers have discovered a protein found naturally in a bacterium (Hansschlegelia quercus) isolated from English oak buds exhibits strong capabilities to differentiate between rare earths. Harnessing its power could revolutionize the entire tech sector by fundamentally changing how critical minerals like rare earths are harvested and purified. Image Credit: Penn State. The discovery is important because rare earth elements, like neodymium and dysprosium, are critical components to almost all modern technologies, from smartphones to hard drives, but they are notoriously hard to separate from the Earth’s crust and from one another.

By figuring out how this molecular handshake works at the atomic level, the researchers have found a way to separate these similar metals from one another quickly, efficiently, and under normal room temperature conditions. This strategy could lead to more efficient, greener mining and recycling practices for the entire tech sector, the researchers state. Related: U.S. Crude Trading At Big Discount To Dubai Oil.

The amazing long history (1826 — 2022) of ELECTRIC CARS!

Posted by in categories: climatology, Elon Musk, robotics/AI, sustainability

A great video on the history of electric cars. I love the AI voice. Also notice Tesla was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning as Tesla Motors. The company’s name is a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer. Elon Musk was an investor.

While electric vehicles (EV) have only recently begun to challenge the internal combustion engine (ICE) for the future of our roads, EVs have been around for over a century. The long history of EVs has been one of many twists and turns.

Stratoplanes: The aircraft that will fly at the edge of space

Posted by in categories: solar power, space travel, sustainability

It is June 2022, and a flying machine that looks like a cross between a prehistoric beast and a spaceship is about to take off. Named the Zephyr S, it has long spindly wings the length of an airliner’s. Together with its small, thin body and head, these make it resemble a pterodactyl. Its shimmering tinfoil-like solar panels and lightweight skeletal frame are more like something you’d see on a craft meant for space.

Its mission for the US Army is a secret, but clearly on its manufacturer’s mind is the desire to shatter a few records, particularly that for the longest flight duration for any type of airplane, which has stood for 63 years. In 1959 two men flew a four-seat Cessna light aircraft for 64 days, 22 hours and 19 minutes, refuelling in-flight from a truck.

British aviation pioneer Chris Kelleher designed the first Zephyr in 2002. His vision was of an uncrewed aircraft capable of “eternal flight” in the stratosphere. He foresaw that solar power and lightweight materials would lead to aircraft capable of staying aloft for months, or even years. The Zephyr S is the first production model.
