While renewable energy sources like solar and wind have now become cheaper than fossil fuels, developing long-term energy storage is key to overcome their intermittency. Lithium-ion batteries are the state-of-the-art battery technology but they can only cost-effectively provide energy for about 6 hours. So, what if we could extend the battery duration to 100 hours… out of thin air … and rust? Literally!

Clean Energy Future. Cheap Abundant Energy Will Solve So Many Problems

Posted by in categories: energy, sustainability

Good day to you all, Hertz have certainly smelt the coffee… will the rest of the world catch up? It is a fact. Clean energy already beats dirty energy and the gaps will only increase with time. It is also a fact that we will produce more than we need, and it will be much cheaper than it is today. Just imagine what global problems could be solved with cheap, clean, abundant energy! If you want more detail then in this video I look at where we are, how mis-pricing of legacy generation is making them appear less expensive than they really are, and how incorrect projections for solar, wind and batteries are giving decision makers flawed future projections, and how clean, renewable energy could help solve some of the greatest problems we face…quickly. Have an amazing day.

A New Futuristic Electric Bike Concept Looks Straight Out of the Tron Series

Posted by in categories: sustainability, transportation

Is this the future of electric vehicles?

Anyone who has seen Tron movies can testify to the impressive vehicles that the characters ride. Now, a designer has created a Tesla electric bike concept called Dust that is reminiscent of the bikes in the movie.

The dreamy bike is draped in a completely metallic finish that seems straight out of the future. It also comes in two models: one is completely black and the other is a contrasting design with a silver finish and matte blac… See More.

The Technologies That Could Finally Make Space Elevators a Reality

Posted by in categories: engineering, solar power, space, sustainability

Like the Stanford Torus, the O’Neill Cylinder, and the Generation Ship, the Space Elevator is one of those ideas that keep popping up! Just when you think scientists and engineers have given up on it, there’s a new round of theoretical studies that assert how it could be done. You might say that the Space Elevator is an idea that’s too good to let go of.

Considering the benefits involved, this should come as no surprise. Granted, the cost in terms of money, resources, and time would be considerable, as are the engineering and logistical challenges involved. But for the one-time price of creating this megastructure, we would be able to realize space-based solar power, habitats in orbit, cities on the Moon and Mars, and more!

Scientists Make Hardened Wooden Knife That’s 3x Sharper Than Stainless-Steel

Posted by in categories: materials, sustainability

The sharpest knives available are made of either steel or ceramic, both of which are man-made materials that must be forged in furnaces under extreme temperatures. Now, researchers have developed a potentially more sustainable way to make sharp knives: using hardened wood. The method, presented October 20th, 2,021 in the journal Matter, makes wood 23 times harder, and a knife made from the material is nearly three times sharper than a stainless-steel dinner table knife.

“The knife cuts through a medium-well done steak easily, with similar performance to a dinner table knife,” says Teng Li, the senior author of the study and a materials scientist at the University of Maryland. Afterward, the hardened wood knife can be washed and reused, making it a promising alternative to steel, ceramic, and disposable plastic knives.

Li and his team also demonstrated that their material can be used to produce wooden nails as sharp as conventional steel nails. Unlike steel nails, the wooden nails the team developed are resistant to rusting. The researchers showed that these wooden nails could be used to hammer together three boards without any damage to the nail. In addition to knives and nails, Li hopes that, in the future, the material can also be used to make hardwood flooring that is more resistant to scratching and wear.

This Off-Grid Water Desalination Plant Does Not Use Up Any Electricity

Posted by in categories: energy, sustainability

Scientists are coming up with practical and cheaper desalination processes for water. It has been going on since half a century ago in Spain. Currently, Ikaria, a Greek island, got access to clean water by virtue of desalination.

The common method used in the process is called reverse osmosis (RO) but it has to be connected to the electricity grid. This is expensive and inaccessible for areas far from the grid. So, researchers have come up with sustainable off-grid desalination systems that run on renewable energy.

Now, microbial desalination cells (MDCs) are being suggested to use. This is developed by MIDES. It produces drinkable water from the sea. It means electro-active bacteria desalinate and sterilize water making it suitable and safe. “This technology offers new options to provide clean water and wastewater treatment to small, isolated locations without electricity,” said Frank Rogalla, director of innovation and technology at Aqualia and a member of the project team.
