Colombian judge uses ChatGPT in ruling

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, robotics/AI, transportation

A judge in Colombia caused a stir by announcing he had used the AI chatbot ChatGPT in preparing a ruling in a children’s medical rights case.

Judge Juan Manuel Padilla said he used the text-generating bot in a case involving a request to exonerate an from paying fees for medical appointments, therapy and transportation given his parents’ limited income.

Padilla told Blu Radio on Tuesday that ChatGPT and other such programs could be useful to “facilitate the drafting of texts” but “not with the aim of replacing” judges.

Creating ‘ghostly mirrors’ for high-power lasers

Posted by in category: transportation

Laser-driven ‘mirrors’ capable of reflecting or manipulating light have been produced in research led at the University of Strathclyde.

The ‘mirrors’ exist for only a fragment of time but could help to reduce the size of ultra-high power lasers, which currently occupy buildings the size of aircraft hangars, to university basement sizes.

They have potential to be developed into a variety of plasma-based, high damage-threshold optical elements that could lead to small footprint, ultra-high-power, ultra-short pulse systems.

Scientists solved mystery to make next-gen lithium batteries

Posted by in categories: energy, nanotechnology, sustainability, transportation

Nanoscale defects and mechanical stress cause the failure of solid electrolytes.

A group of researchers has claimed to have found the cause of the recurring short-circuiting issues of lithium metal batteries with solid electrolytes. The team, which consists of members from Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, aims to further the battery technology, which is lightweight, inflammable, energy-dense, and offers quick-charge capabilities. Such a long-lasting solution can help to overcome the barriers when it comes to the adoption of electric vehicles around the world.

How ChatGPT may expand our intellectual discourse and boost research

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, transportation

If we’re worried about plagiarism why not train students to work with AI writing assistants and learn to think through the dialogue? We could teach them to use chatbots to get ideas, to generate alternative approaches to a topic, to research questions, and to edit what they get into a coherent whole.

At the same time, we also have to teach our students to be careful and think critically about engaging with AIs and assessing the credibility of what they say.

Mercedes Claims to Have Achieved Level 3 Automation, Beating Tesla

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, transportation

German automaker Mercedes-Benz claims to have achieved Level 3 autonomy — “conditionally automated” vehicles that can monitor their driving environment and make informed decisions on behalf of the driver, but still require humans to occasionally take over — in the United States, an incremental but noteworthy step towards a future void of steering wheels and foot pedals.

“It is a very proud moment for everyone to continue this leadership and celebrate this monumental achievement as the first automotive company to be certified for Level 3 conditionally automated driving in the US market,” said Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dimitris Psillakis in a statement.

The Rise of Automated Robots in the Future of Car Maintenance and Driving

Posted by in categories: business, employment, robotics/AI, transportation

The automobile business is continuously evolving, and as technology advances, we are seeing a shift toward a future of automated robots in the car maintenance sector. This move is expected to have a number of advantages, including greater accuracy and efficiency in automotive maintenance, as well as the capacity to work on older vehicles that traditional mechanics may be unfamiliar with.

As the owner of an older family truck, I have direct knowledge of the difficulty in finding a mechanic willing to work on their vehicle even if it is well kept up. With the emergence of automated robots, there will be no need to rely on human mechanics, as robots will be capable of doing the required jobs with ease. They will be able to detect faults and undertake routine maintenance, such as replacing belts, radiators, and other parts, without specialist training or knowledge.

The benefits of automated robots in automotive repair go beyond increased productivity. The robots will be built to work on a wide range of automobiles, regardless of age, allowing owners of older vehicles to maintain their vehicles without having to worry about finding a mechanic ready to work on them. Furthermore, automated robots will improve automotive maintenance accuracy since they will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and will be able to complete duties with precision and speed.

Ford hits back at Tesla’s price cuts

Posted by in categories: Elon Musk, sustainability, transportation

It’s probably a good time to buy an electric car.

Ford is slashing the price of its electric Mustang Mach-E by as much $6,000, keeping pace with Tesla’s sweeping price cuts, announced just weeks before.

Ford is also increasing production of the Mach-E in an attempt to shorten wait times, which Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer of Ford’s electric Model e division, said can be up to 150 days currently.
