World’s largest geyser erupts at Yellowstone National Park

USGS scientists and park staff stress that there’s nothing to worry about in terms of the supervolcano underlying Yellowstone.

“We have zero concerns that anything is happening volcanically,” Stovall said, adding that there hasn’t been a Yellowstone supervolcano eruption in more than 600,000 years. “There’s been geysers erupting through that whole time and that doesn’t mean that anything is happening with magma underground.”

3.0-magnitude earthquake rattles parts of central Oklahoma

LANGSTON, Okla. (AP) — A 3.0-magnitude earthquake has shaken parts of central Oklahoma.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was recorded at 1:50 p.m. Sunday about 9 miles (15 kilometers) north-northwest of Langston, which is about 43 miles (69 kilometers) north-northwest of Oklahoma City. The temblor was recorded at a depth of about 3 miles (5.5 kilometers).

No injuries or damage were reported. Geologists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0.

I don’t have kids. But there are lots of kids in my life. I’ve also worked closely with thousands of entry-level developers over the course of my 20 years in tech. Throughout my career I’ve been approached by parents looking for advice on how to encourage their kids to become software engineers. It is, after all, the #1 profession today, according to US News & World Report. It’s also a really fun job.

There’s a temptation to treat kids like Olympic hopefuls. Get them coding as soon as they can type! Craft an ascetic childhood of programming challenges and summer code camp! Surely, that will ensure their future success. Right?

Well, maybe.
