What does a city of one million people on Mars look like?

Posted by in categories: alien life, computing, virtual reality

An urban utopia on Mars might be closer than you think.

For the past year, creative professionals, students, space geeks—even families—have been creating their visions for a metropolis on the fourth planet from the sun. The final winners of the HP Mars Home Planet challenge were announced today by HP and unveiled in a VR experience at SIGGRAPH 2018, an annual computer graphics convention, in Vancouver.

“The amazing entries from the HP Mars Home Planet challenge give us a virtual window into what life on Mars could be like for a million members of humanity,” says judge Dr. Darlene Lim, a geobiologist and principal investigator, NASA Biologic Analog Science. “Technological advancement is being met by a broad array of foundational space science and planetary research—a confluence that will optimistically serve to accelerate our path toward human exploration and settlement of Mars.”

Combating Crime in a Virtual Future Filled with Love and Sex

Posted by in categories: sex, virtual reality

It’s unclear whether we’ll actually reach the point of achieving legitimate mind-uploading, which addresses the dilemma of physical continuity. What is clear, however, is that virtual reality is quickly making room for the ability of users to fall in love. In so doing, this will also make room for other ventures—both positive (sex) and problematic (crime).

As we continue pushing forward towards a future of sexual abundance, whereby getting into bed with technology is the new norm, we’ll also need to remain vigilant against criminals who wish to exploit us — even sexually.

We Already are Artificial Intelligence

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, space, virtual reality

Very interesting.

“It is possible for a computer to become conscious. Basically, we are that. We are data, computation, memory. So we are conscious computers in a sense.”

— Tom Campbell, NASA, Author of My Big TOE

A Moon For All Mankind

Posted by in categories: bioengineering, space travel, virtual reality

Few in life get to walk on the Moon. Samsung says, do what you can’t. Working with creative agency Iris and engineering experts Mannetron, Framestore proudly joined Samsung’s mission to bring space travel to all, in the approach to the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing. ‘A Moon For All Mankind’ is the world’s first lunar gravity simulation VR experience, created in collaboration with NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), using the Samsung Gear VR and a custom-built rig. Having launched under embargo at the 2018 Winter Olympics and at Mobile World Congress, July sees the experience land publicly at Samsung 837, in New York City.

The Holographic Display Of The Future Is Here

Posted by in categories: augmented reality, holograms, virtual reality

The holographic display of the future is here and you can have one on your desk for under $600.

Ever since I saw Princess Leia appealing to Obi Wan that he was her only hope when I was 11, I’ve wanted a holographic display. Movies like Minority Report and Back to the Future II (do you remember the shark hologram that ate Marty?) have consumed thousands of people’s lives over the past few decades. But until now, no one has been able to make a scalable device that would let groups of people, unaided by a VR or AR headset, see and touch a living and moving 3D world.

That’s changing today with the launch of the Looking Glass, a new type of interface that achieves that dream of the hologram we’ve been promised for so long. The Looking Glass is technically a lightfield and volumetric display hybrid, but that’s pretty nerdy-sounding. I like to just call it a holographic display.
